The John Hanby Bonsai Academy Level One - Day Four (Sunday 11th October)
The topic under discussion for this session was “An introduction to bonsai display”.
After a short lecture in the morning the students, working in groups, had to prepare selected material ready for exhibition paying particular attention to the foliage, deadwood, mossing the soil surface, and cleaning the pot.
In the afternoon session the prepared trees had to be exhibited in a tokonome display with the students responsible for selecting an appropriate table, accent plant, and scroll. The resulting displays were then discussed and improvements made where necessary.
For many students this was their first attempt at tokonome display. The results were very good and the learning experience was greatly enjoyed.
The academy caters for students at all levels but with a strong desire to learn more. We are starting another level one group in January 2010 and anyone interested in enrolling or requiring further information should contact the nursery.
