John Hanby Bonsai - Attracting Attention!!!!
In April this year we had a pleasant and intriguing visit from professional photographer and photographic lecturer Jacqueline Callaghan. As part of an ongoing project
Jacqueline wanted to capture images to support a philosophical enquiry into the journey of the creation of a bonsai and the relationship between the tree and its designer. This is part of a wider concept investigating our relationship with nature and the means by which we exert physical control over it. It was refreshing to be able to discuss my own thoughts and bonsai philosophies with someone approaching the subject from a different viewpoint, outside the hobby.
Trees were selected and photographed but not in the usual exhibition format. Jacqueline hopes to present her work on completion in an art gallery situation. I look forward to publishing details of her exhibition and some of her photographic images in the not too distant future.
Recently we were pleased to welcome freelance journalist Claire Roberts to a Bonsai class here at the nursery. Claire is writing an article for the “pursuits” section of the
Financial Times Weekend Magazine. Students were kept in the dark during the morning session because we wanted Claire to experience a normal classroom environment. With the arrival of a professional photographer after lunch we had to come clean and everyone was thrilled to get involved. After a guided tour of the nursery, practical involvement in the class, and such an enthusiastic welcome from her fellow students, I have a feeling we may see Claire again! The article featured in the Financial Times Weekend paper on the 1st/2nd August. Click here to view the article online >>.
In autumn this year John has been invited to lecture and demonstrate his way of creating/refining bonsai in New Zealand and Australia. It is a great honour for him to be
able to share his experience and knowledge with dedicated enthusiasts on the other side of the world. At the convention in
Christchurch John will carry out 2 days of demonstrations and a full day workshop. Next stop is Sydney for a full day workshop followed by a day demonstration in front of the local bonsai clubs. It is always interesting to see how people pursue the same hobby but in a different climate and environment. Watch out for our report on the trip later this year.
