At a recent Larch Workshop held at the John Hanby Bonsai School,
a student's large piece of raw material underwent a major restyling exercise.
Drastic measures were necessary, including the use of a large chisel,
to transform the raw material into a very dramatic looking tree.
Photographs of the tree's transformation are shown below:

Commencing work on the raw material - a bow saw and chisel are
not the usual tools in the studio, but on this occasion - drastic
measures were needed.
The tree lacked taper so it was decided to utilise the lower branches
a create a dramatic looking tree. |

Ouch!
The chisel was firmly inserted into the upper part of the tree
to create a large split - this could then be used to tear down the
trunk - helping to create a natural looking piece of deadwood. |

 |
Wedges were inserted into the opening in the trunk to help force
open the tear.
Much force was needed to prise the trunk apart. |

After tearing and shaping the top part of the tree the student
carefully wired the remaining branches and, with the help of John,
positioned them into the appropriate positions.
A much more mature and dramatic looking tree was created. |
