Studio Stories – Styled at last (Part one)

Sometimes I work on nursery trees, sometimes I work on client’s trees……and sometimes if I’ve been really good I get to work on my own trees. Hopefully these regular visits will give you an insight into what goes on behind closed doors……….

Styled at last…..Blaauws Juniper

About 5 or 6 years ago this batch of trees were pruned back and they have remained on various benches for sale ever since. This one is typical of the batch and obviously customers saw no potential in the material. The tree has been cleaned out ready for wiring.

The tree has now been wired and the bark has been stripped from some potential deadwood. It is ready for styling.

The tree after it’s first styling with some serious bending bringing the foliage much closer to, and around the trunk to create the image of an older looking more mature bonsai.

Detail of the deadwood and shari.

The tree will be repotted in the spring into an appropriate ceramic bonsai pot. As the foliage starts to develop I have a feeling this batch of trees will not be with us much longer.
